Blackberry fans say hallelujah, because the brand new and long awaited slider Blackberry handset has just been uncovered! Videos and images on the web show this super smart phone in all its glory. The first reports suggest that the successor to the Blackberry Bold 9700 - the creatively named Blackberry Bold 9800 - will come complete with a 3.2-inch touchscreen along with connectivity via 3G, EDGE, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth! Very little has been said about the rest of the new smartphone's feature set, apart from further rumours that the camera function will be 5 mega pixels with an auto focus function and a flash.
The 9800 will be RIM's first device to offer a touchscreen display alongside a portrait sliding-Qwerty keyboard, hopefully providing the best of both worlds and, apparently, the operating system has undergone a serious redesign as well.
As smartphones dominate the mobile telecommunications business, it's easy to see that the main players are increasing the stakes each time they bring out a new handset. Apple's employee 'accidentally' left the iPhone 4G in a bar, which led to an online unveiling of some of the top secret smartphone's features. Blackberrys and iPhones seem to be the main rivals, with each phone having clear advantages over the other.
On the iPhone, owners cannot to watch Adobe Flash videos whilst with the Blackberry you are allowed to access almost any media you like. With the iPhone, despite it being an mp3 player too, you cannot choose your iTunes to be used as a ringtone. In fact, you have to buy these separately. And although it has a 3 mega pixel camera with auto focus, the iPhone does not have a built in camera flash.
A Blackberry device is not without its annoyances though, but they do seem to be trivial compared to those of the iPhone. Simple annoyances such as not being able to turn the shutter sound off when you're using the camera and the inability to record video.
There have been some complaints about the design of previous Blackberry smart phones, particularly the Blackberry 9670, but these do seem to have been largely solved in the forthcoming 9800. The preview videos and leaked footage online make it look like a real step up for RIM.
A debate over which smartphone to choose, which will continue for years to come I'm sure, Blackberry will shortly be adding another model to the list with their Blackberry Bold 9800.
