There are two kinds of cholesterol: good (HDL) and bad (LDL). Too much of bad cholesterol could block the arteries which can result to heart attacks or strokes. An increased level of good cholesterol, on the other hand, can do wonders for your body. It reduces the risk brought about by bad cholesterol. Today, there are a lot of medications and supplements that aid in increasing your good cholesterol level. However, doctors don't usually recommend those drugs and some supplements may bring unwanted side effects. If you want to raise good cholesterol, you can do it naturally.
Exercise
The benefits of an active lifestyle are well-documented; raising HDL level is one of those benefits. Cardiovascular work outs like biking, swimming, aerobics, running, jogging and even walking on a regular basis will raise good cholesterol level. A good 15 or 30 minutes per session for at least three times a week is usually suggested by doctors and fitness experts. For beginners, don't focus too much on the intensity; it might cause some nasty injuries which could hurt your cause. Instead, start gently making sure you only push yourself enough to get your heart pumping.
Quit Smoking
Everyone is aware of the dangers smoking imposes, but some still can't stop this bad habit. Cigarettes contain a lot of toxic chemicals which could damage your arteries. Some of these toxins can also increase normal heart rate, among other health risks. Quitting smoking can actually raise HDL levels.
Drink Moderately
According to some studies, drinking in moderation regularly boosts HDL levels by a few points. Studies suggest that drinking two glasses of red wine for men and one glass for women lowers the risk of heart attacks. Not only does it increase HDL levels, but red wine is also said to reduce the damage of blood vessels due to plaque deposits. This should never be seen as a treatment by any means; if you're not a drinker, don't drink for the sake of boosting HDL levels. Drinking too much alcoholic beverage increases triglycerides in your blood, another type of bad cholesterol and could also result in weight gain.
Use Good Fat
When making food, use monounsaturated fat found in olive oil or canola oil instead of palm oil or lard.
Eat Well
Food rich in omega-3 such as halibut, mackerel and other oily fishes do a lot of good for your health; it can lower bad cholesterol levels and raise good cholesterol levels. If you decided to take supplements, consult your doctor first; some brands are not as reliable as others. Also, don't confuse Omega-3 with Omega-6; mmega-6 does indeed reduce cholesterol level but it does not discriminate between HDL and LDL.
A high soluble fiber diet will also help raise good cholesterol. Soluble fiber are obtained from oats, vegetables, fruits and legumes such as peanuts.
Aside from being fiber rich lot of nuts like peanuts, almonds and hazel nuts contain monounsaturated fat which increases HDL levels. Instead of eating corn or potato chips when watching a movie, snack on some nuts instead. You could still consume the iconic movie partner, the pop corn, but make sure it's not coated in butter.
