We've all been warned by doctors and health experts about the risks of consuming too much cholesterol. What is cholesterol exactly? Most only know it's a harmful substance found in food and drugs that could result in a number of heart related and circulatory problems. While that is true, there are different types of cholesterol; some could even be good for our health. Knowing what is cholesterol is very important; too much bad cholesterol and not enough of good cholesterol could result to serious health problems.
Good cholesterol – Also known as High-density lipoproteins (HDL). Many health experts say that high levels of HDL in the blood stream, specifically HDL-C, fend off a number of cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, a significantly low level of HDL in the blood could greatly increase the potential of suffering a heart attack and other heart diseases. According to experts, HDL sweeps away the bad cholesterols in the blood stream and delivers it to the liver. It also helps deter the buildup of arterial plaque.
Some researches indicate that men generally have lower HDL levels than women. Genetics could also play a factor to the HDL level in some individuals. In order to increase HDL levels in the blood, a combination of healthy lifestyle and proper diet must be followed. Fish oil is one of the most popular sources of beneficial fatty acids. If you're going to take fish oil as a supplement, make sure it has only omega-3 and not omega-6. Omega-3 is a fatty acid that decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Omega-6, on the other hand, reduces cholesterol; both good and bad. Having a high fiber diet and limiting alcohol consumption also helps. Losing weight and regular exercise also lowers bad cholesterol while boosting HDL levels.
Bad Cholesterol – Also called Low-density lipoprotein (LDL). This is the common conception people have when asked "what is cholesterol?" Too much LDL in the blood stream tends to build up in the arterial walls causing clogs which leads to heart attacks and stroke. Trans fat and saturated fat are the most common types of LDL found in a variety of food products.
Besides healthy lifestyle and proper diet, there are a number of supplements and medications that can lower LDL in the blood. Be careful though that some drugs may decrease LDL levels but could have other dangerous side effects. Clofibrate was once used to lower bad cholesterol levels. However, a number of studies conducted showed that although it is effective a lowering LDL levels, it increased the risk of cancer.
Before considering taking medication to lower cholesterol, you must first consult your doctor. Since LDL is naturally produced by the body, genetics play a big factor. If you have a family history of high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy lifestyle may not be enough. In which case, your doctor may allow you to take medication. However, if you developed high LDL levels because of consuming food filled with trans fat and saturated fat a change in diet as well as regular work out ought to do the trick.
