Before we can find out why people use a cholesterol chart, we should first understand what it is and how it is used. A cholesterol chart is basically a chart that shows you the different kinds of cholesterol in your body and the different levels that people usually have these at. You will find that listed on these charts are the desirable levels, the borderline levels and the high levels that you might want to know about when it comes to cholesterol. These charts are used by doctors and medical personnel to compare your cholesterol levels with what is written there and you will then see where your cholesterol levels are at and what you need to do once these are compared with the levels on the chart.
The cholesterol levels you will see on a cholesterol chart are divided into sections with total cholesterol levels, triglycerides, low density cholesterol and high density cholesterol all having their desirable, borderline and high risk number printed on it. When it comes to your total cholesterol levels, the desirable level is at 200 mg/dL and below. When total cholesterol levels are at 200 to 240 mg/dL, this is considered borderline high. A high risk total cholesterol level is pegged at 240 mg/dL and above. For triglycerides, the desirable level that you should have for a healthy body and heart is at 150 mg/dL and below, 150 to 500 mg/dL is borderline high and higher than 500 mg/dL is dangerously high.
Some of the numbers you have to look out for are your LDL and HDL numbers. When it comes to your low density and high density cholesterol levels, you will see that these are lower than the numbers presented above. If you are talking about your low density cholesterol levels and you want to find out what level is desirable, you will find that on a cholesterol chart, your low density cholesterol levels should be at 130 mg/dL and below. Borderline high is at 130 to 160 mg/dL and high risk levels are at 160 to 240 mg/dL. For your high density cholesterol levels, you should be fine if you are at a 50 mg/dL level, are borderline high if you are at 50 to 35 mg/dL and dangerously high risk at 35 mg/dL and below.
You may be wondering why the high density cholesterol levels seems to become high risk with the lower numbers it's at. This is because high density cholesterol is considered good cholesterol and the higher the numbers you have of this in your system, the less likely you are to suffer from heart problems.
How do you find out what your cholesterol levels are and how can you use the chart with these results? You find out what your cholesterol levels are when you get your blood tested for it. You will be required to fast for at least 12 hours before the test for you to get accurate results. Once the blood is taken and tested, you will then be told what your cholesterol levels are and these are then compared to the chart. You will then be advised to lower your cholesterol levels, if you are found to have high cholesterol levels in your results.
