When people ask the question "what is cholesterol", the first thing that they think about is it is bad for you and it can kill you. What they do not know is that there is actually good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. What is the difference between the two and what do these two types of cholesterol do to a person's body?
Before we start comparing the two, let us first understand, what is cholesterol? In a nutshell, cholesterol is a fatty substance or lipid that the body produces naturally. This can also be obtained by the body from animal sources. You can also get this from vegetable and fruit sources and from anything that comes from plant sources, like nuts, vegetable oil and the like. The animal sources that introduce cholesterol into the body include such food items like dairy products, meat of any kind and eggs. While carbohydrates cannot give you cholesterol directly, it can develop into cholesterol if these develop into saturated fats and these develop into saturated fats if you eat too much sugar, starches and other carbohydrate rich foods.
What is cholesterol for? You should know that cholesterol does serve a function in your body so it is not right for people to say that you should eliminate cholesterol from your body. Cholesterol is actually needed for a person's body to function properly. It helps give a person's cell membranes its much needed stability and rigidity and it also helps with the production of many of the hormones in your body. Cholesterol also helps with digestion by producing bile salts and also helps with the distribution of anti-oxidants to different parts of the body.
This is why it is not a good idea to tell a person to eliminate cholesterol from the body since you will need it for a lot of things. The right approach should be to encourage the person to change from ingesting bad cholesterol to good cholesterol. What this means is that you should find out what kinds of foods can help make good cholesterol and which ones are the culprits behind bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol also goes by the name High Density Lipoprotein or HDL and bad cholesterol is called Low Density Lipoprotein, or LDL. When you have high levels of HDL in your bloodstream, you are decreasing the possibility of suffering from heart disease. The opposite is true of LDL since high levels of this cholesterol type can increase your risks of heart problems.
To ensure that the cholesterol you are taking in is the good kind, you need to avoid processed meats, egg yolks, dairy products that are full fat, fatty meat cuts and even poultry with the skin on. To help you maintain a certain level of good cholesterol in your body, you should ingest the oily products that come from healthy sources like olives, fish, nuts and flaxseed. You should also try to ingest more fruits like blueberries and juices like cranberry juice that can help flush out bad cholesterol and to eat oats and soybean products.
