One of the dilemmas that many structural engineers solve when it comes to putting up different structures and buildings is the problem concerning what materials to use for putting up these projects. A structural engineer's duties includes determining what structural components are needed to put together the building in the design it is meant to be put up in with considerations for safety and integrity at the forefront. Also part of his duties is to ensure that this structure will be able to stand strong and withstand the rigors of time, use and nature. When a building experiences problems due to structural concerns, one of the people that is usually sued is the structural engineer and this is when an engineer is thankful that he has a structural engineer's professional liability insurance policy.
Also called a PLI, a structural engineer's professional liability insurance helps an engineer with the cost of defending his work and his name when the need arises. This kind of an insurance also helps him shoulder some of the cost of reparation should he be found responsible for such damage and is tasked to pay for the losses incurred. Not having a structural engineer's professional liability insurance policy usually indicates that the person may have to shoulder not only the cost of paying for the defense but also the cost of repaying for the damages and losses that resulted from negligence.
A PLI for engineers, like the structural engineer's professional liability insurance, is sometimes called by another term and this is E&O insurance or errors and omissions insurance. This term is often used for engineering and architectural PLIs since this often covers problems that come from errors that engineers and architects make with their jobs or decisions and from the omissions of certain elements needed to make their designs and structures go up safely. Other professions also have their own PLIs and are given terms that are exclusive to their profession, like the medical malpractice policy term used for PLIs covering the medical world. A lot of other professions do share the E&O insurance term being used by the engineering industry though and this includes the technological industry.
When you take out a structural engineer's professional liability insurance policy, either for yourself as an independent contractor or for your company, you will need to keep in mind that you will have to renew your policy every year. You will need to keep your policy active so as to benefit from its protection should something happen to the structures you helped build sometime in the near or distant future. Since a lot of structural problems do not materialize as soon as the building is finished or while it is being put up, the need to keep your coverage active for a long time is imperative. Those who sometimes opt to cancel their policies a few years down the line find that problems regarding structural integrity emerge years later. This then causes them a lot of grief since they were then expected to shoulder a lot of the expenses that such a problem incurred by themselves without the help of an insurance policy.
