Have you ever experienced a serious neck pain? Was there ever a time in your life when you could hardly move your head because every time you tried to do so, a sharp pain came rushing from your neck up and you could scarcely breathe? If there was, then you are not alone. Many people go through the same discomfort.
There may be a number of reasons as to why people experience this kind of pain. More often, it is caused by some injuries or muscular and mechanical problems. There may be arthritis, or a trapped nerve which was caused by swelling in any of the discs in between vertebrae.
The pain can be mild but it can also be serious to the point of disabling the person from moving at all. It can also be either acute (sudden) or chronic (when it lasts more months). This kind of pain is more usual in women than in men, although most people are said to experience it at least once in their lives.
As already mentioned, there are several causes to this pain. Among the most common ones are the following:
- Injury or trauma
- Stress and worries
- Wrong or awkward position in sleep
- Prolonged used of computer
If you are experiencing a tolerable neck pain, you better stay as active as possible. Go on with your normal routine. Bed rest is not necessary. In fact, it may just aggravate your problem. If you have a collar for support, try not to depend on it much or wear it for longer than two days. If the pain is chronic, it is wise to consult with your therapist (a physiotherapist or a chiropractor) to know about your treatment options.
More often, an acute neck pain goes away on its own and will not need any therapy. However, if the pain stays longer than expected, a patient is often recommended to go through medications, chiropractic treatment, physiotherapy, muscle training, and/or acupuncture.
Pain killers like paracetamol are effective in curing a neckache. Aside from paracetamol, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may also be used. However, they are not recommended for patients with history of asthma, indigestion, kidney problem, hypertension, and heart disease.
Again, neck pain is often not a cause of serious illness and usually goes away within a week. However, if you are experiencing other underlying problems, then you must go to the hospital right away. Some of these underlying problems are:
- Rashes
- Fever
- Inability to put the chin on the chest
- Inability to see well in the light
- Vomiting
- Back pains
- Pain behind one eye
- Vision, taste, or hearing imbalance
- Reduced muscle power in the arms or legs
- Unexplained weight loss
- Incessant pain which does not go away despite treatment
- Numbness, clumsiness or weakness of the arms
Remember that early detection is always the best cure for any type of illness. When you get to the root of the problem early, you find the solution early too.
