Did you know that 90 percent of Americans suffer from back pains at some period in their lifetime? This is one of the most common pains that people go through and looking for its cure is everyone's common pursuit.
The pain in the back or lumbar pain is actually a symptom. It often involves injuries or diseases. Abnormalities of organs within the abdominal area may also set off this kind of pain. Pregnancies may also cause it. This is why it is very important to get to the root of the pain first before going through or taking any form of medication. Logically, the cure will depend on what's causing the pain.
When you are suffering from pain in the lumbar area, you may feel one or some of the following:
- A pain radiating down the side, back, or front of your legs or may simply be confined in the lower back.
- A pain which worsens with activity or movement.
- A pain which comes with numbness or weakness in the legs.
- A pain which disables you from standing on your toes or bringing your foot downwards.
- A pain which may either be worse in the morning or at night, or may get worse after sitting for a long time.
Some pain may stay for a while or may easily be eased by using some over-the-counter ointments and patches. However, there may be back pains that don't seem to want to go away, or those which need more earnest attention. Read below and know when you must seek medical help for your lumbar pain.
- When you have fallen from a height.
- When you have had a vehicular accident.
- When you are over 50 years old and you have had a minor trauma like falling down some steps or slipping on the floor, landing on the buttocks.
- When you have a history of prolonged use of steroids like when you have asthma or rheumatologic disorders.
- When you have osteoporosis in the family.
- When you are more than 70 years old and are susceptible to infections, abdominal causes of pain, and even cancer.
- When you have history of cancer.
- When you have had a recent infection.
- When your temperature is more than 100F.
- When there's unexplained weight loss.
- When you can not raise your big toe, lower foot, or ankle.
- When you can not stand on your toes.
- When you lose bowel or bladder control.
- When you can't stop urine stream.
- When the back pain doesn't go away even after taking prescribed medications.
It is wrong to treat a lumbar pain as a small matter. As already mentioned, this pain is a symptom and it is important to know what it is trying to tell you about your body. The earlier you get to the root of the problem, the more possible you can free your back from the pain and live your life normally.
