If I was to tell you that you are committing suicide as we speak what would be your response? You would probably tell me I'm "out to lunch" or something along those lines. If you take a hard look at you the foods you are consuming on a daily basis and they are loaded with cholesterol – then you are committing suicide! Study after study has shown that the excess cholesterol in your bloodstream that your body doesn't need may be used up by the heart arteries which leads to blockages and eventually heart disease. One particular study is the Framingham Heart Study that found that the higher your blood cholesterol, the greater the risk for heart disease. You can find this study online at http://www.framinghamheartstudy.org/index.html if you would like more information.
The National Cholesterol Educational Program of the U.S National Institute of Health recommends a diet called the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes or (TLC) diet. This is an excellent source for streamlining whatever diet you are currently on because it emphasizes reducing your levels of foods rich in saturated fats. Saturated fats increases your cholesterol so we should pay close attention to what we are eating. You can find the information on TLC http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/cgi-bin/chd/step2intro.cgi . If your cholesterol is high and you have a habit of eating fast foods on the run, you may have to look at some changes in your lifestyle such as packing a healthy lunch or embarking on an exercise regimen. Whatever changes you decide to make, the health benefits will greatly outweigh the inconvenience of some things you might find unpleasant.
So lets take a look some foods to shun and some foods low in saturated fat that will in turn lower your cholesterol. Some of the TLC guidelines for most people are as follows – Saturated fat intake is reduced to 7% of your days total calories, 25-35% of the days total calories from fat and sodium intake is limited to 2400 milligrams per day. Some foods to stay away from that are high in saturated fat are: processed meat such as cold cuts and sausages, butter, sour cream, ice cream, cheeses such as cheddar, coconut oil and pastries. Instead use olive or canola oil, there are now margarines on the market that actually block the absorption of cholesterol that use plant stanols, eat oatmeal in the morning and cholesterol free eggs. Stick to white meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and you will not only see your cholesterol level off where it should be, but you will find your alertness and energy levels will go up.
Water is another important element to keeping your cholesterol levels in check. Water kind of flushes out toxic impurities as well as cholesterol from your body, so don't limit your water intake. Additionally, it keeps you hydrated and and you will feel as if your body is working more efficient. Also your body will produce good cholesterol known as LDL instead of HDL which is bad cholesterol.
The bottom line is when you start changing your diet and eating healthy a whole bunch of good things are happening in your body and is beneficial for you and your family. Add exercise to the mix and you will be fighting off the aging process, diabetes, heart disease and a host of other diseases. Start living healthy and enjoy your life instead of slowly killing yourself – save your life by eating foods that will give you life.
