Ayurveda is a of alternative medicine that is growing in popularity in the western world. It originated│started in India thousands of years ago and is popularly used in the country and the surrounding regions till date. Migraine is knows as "Ardhavabhedak" in Ayurveda. There are Ayurvedic herbs for migraines and they are used in the following procedures:
- Swedan or local fomentation -- With the use of Nirgundi decoction (Vitex Negundo), the patient uses medicated steam that is directed at the forehead as well as the temple area. This is usually done right after the application of some herbal oil.
- Nasya or medicated oil drops – There are two types of nasya: the Shirovirechan and the Avapidak. These oils are both made│created from the renowned Ayurvedic herbs for migraines. Shirovirechan is strong and are instilled as nasal drops. It sneezing and watery disharge. Avapidak, on the other hand, is the nasya that is paste-like from one herb or several ones. It is inserted into the nostrils and functions more like an inhaler. Ayurvedic herbs for migraines like Pippali (piper longum) and Vacha (acorus calamus) are used in creating this kind of nasya along with honey. Both drops are meant to the cause of throbbing headache.
- Anuvasan Basti or medicated enema—Medicated oils are used as enemas and they are often taken at regular intervals, usually about 50 ml in amount for each dose. Sesame oil and Mahanarayan oil (which is mainly consists of asparagus racemosus) are often used as Basti.
- Shirobasti or scalp treatment with medicated oil or milk—This is a special│unique procedure where a cap (cylindrical in shape) is fitted on the shaved head and sealed so as to prevent any leakage of the herbal formula. Medicated milk and oils are poured into the cap. The cap ensures the medicine to remain in contact with the patient's scalp for sometime. This procedure│process is done regularly until improvement is felt.
- Dahan or local heat branding—When the condition does not respond to standard treatment using Ayurvedic herbs for migraines, heat branding is performed at the temple on the affected side.
- Shaman or symptomatic oral treatment—Some examples of these oral medications are Bhallatakasav, Tribhyvankirti, Godanti Bhasma, and Triphala Guggulu. They are the most common Ayurvedic herbs for migraines. Some of them do not only cure the headaches but also treat blood impurities. In addition, they also substantially aid in reducing anxiety and stress. One important reminder though: A detailed study of the person's constitution should be first to know the combination of the herbs.
