Many people do not understand exactly what Chinese calendars really are, but to be honest, it is very close to the Western calendar, it has just been in place for longer. 2600 B.C is when the first Chinese calendar was introduced and it is the biggest chronological calendar on the books to date. Emperor Huang Ti was the person that discovered the cycle of the zodiac which the Lunar Chinese calendar centers itself around, basically, the moon cycle is what this particular calendar goes by.


In Western calendar, as many of us know have different names for each month, the Chinese calendar is exactly the same, they just name their months after animals. Each animal represents one of the animals that visited Buddha before he left earth or at least that is how the story is told.

Thus is the reasoning behind the Chinese zodiac, which is tied in with the calendar. Many Chinese beliefs maintain that the animal names connected to the calendar are hugely influential for the people who were born in those years. It can affect everything from personality to preferences.

It is a known fact that most of the world is Chinese and to be honest, Chinese New Years is a well celebrated holiday all over the world. In short, the Chinese calendar is the calendar that let's everyone know exactly when the culture's numerous celebrations starts and ends. The Gregorian system is definitely one of the most used calendars in the world and the Chinese also follow this calendar for many of their universal purposes.

The zodiac is not the only thing which governs this calendar. Certain aspects of astronomy also play a part in it. Notably, the phases of the moon and the sun's longitude play a huge role in determining the Lunar calendar. As you might imagine, the system has thus been greatly influenced by certain aspects of science.

On one hand, the Lunar calendar bases its dates on the dates of the cycles of the moon. The cycles for the new moons are used specifically. Whenever the new moon occurs, it indicates a new month. The longitude of the sun is also used. It determines the Principal Terms of the Chinese calendar. Those in turn determine the actual numbers of each month.

In closing, as mentioned, each year corresponds to an animal. 2009 is the year of the Ox. The year of the Ox occurs every twelve years. The same can be said for the Dog, Rat, Snake, et cetera.
