Before you complicate your world, the one thing you have to remember is that acquiring ovarian cysts is considered normal for women in their child-bearing years. As soon as menstruation sets in, there is now this possibility of mild cases of cysts appearing within the interior lining of the ovaries, or outside the almond shaped organ. Ovarian cysts happen when the female egg cell is not released properly from the ovaries during the menstrual cycle. When this happens, the organ fills up with liquid, and a small amount of that is eventually trapped under a thin pocket of membrane, creating an irregularly shaped sac that measures less than a few centimeters in diameter.

However, these small cysts are eventually expelled by the body after 3 to 4 menstrual periods. A woman who has this type of ovarian cysts (called as functional cysts and simple cysts,) usually experiences nothing more than an irregular menstrual cycle, an occasional pain in the pelvis area and maybe a spot of bother during urination. Health care providers usually recommend bed rest and maybe a few pain relievers too.

Otherwise, doctors do not prescribe anything for functional cysts. Women are advised to return for another check up after 4 months to verify if indeed the cysts have gone away. Some may be advised to take contraceptive pills afterwards in order to make their menstrual cycle return to normal.

On the other hand, some women may suddenly feel jabs of pain in their pelvic region, near their reproductive organ, or somewhere near the lower abdomen. Pain -- sharp, severe and seemingly unexplained pain is a standard marker that there is something seriously wrong.

Using CAT scan, sonogram and / or ultrasound, health care providers may ascertain the presence of complicated ovarian cysts. As the name suggests, these cysts tend to develop into cases that would need medical intervention. Some may collapse unto themselves (burst cyst); others might become twisted (cyst torsion); while a small population of women may find themselves nursing numerous and cancerous cysts in the ovaries.

Aside from the pain, some of the more common symptoms of complicated ovarian cysts are: changes in the frequency or volume of menstrual discharge (menstruation becoming too heavy, becoming too light, delayed inexplicably, or occurring only days or weeks within each other); backaches especially during the menstrual period; painful discharges during menstruation; pain while urinating; bloating and swelling of one side of the lower abdomen; drastic change in weight, either putting a lot of weight on or losing a lot in a small interval of time; abdominal pain after sexual intercourse; bruises around the pelvic region; and even a sudden growth of acne, facial hair and body hair.
