Despite the seemingly alarming description, ovarian cysts are actually more common than anyone would care to think. Almost all women go through this medical condition unknowingly. In fact, health care providers say that as soon as a woman becomes sexually mature and begins menstruation, the chances of getting ovarian cysts are almost 100%.
Fortunately, many of these are benign, unobtrusive and eventually dissolve in a few months time. Some women, particularly those who are in their childbearing years and may be having infrequent menstruation usually have ovarian cysts; but they normally do not experience any dire effects or complications. Only when the conditions turn unfavorable do small population of women suffer from possibly painful and dangerous conditions such as extreme forms of burst ovarian cyst.
Burst ovarian cyst, also known as hemorrhagic cyst, blood cyst, hematocyst and hemtocele is one of many types of ovarian abnormalities wherein bleeding occurs in the actual tissue. Just to clarify matters, a cyst is a closed sac that usually contains air, fluids and other semi-solid material like hair or tissue (except pus.) An ovarian cyst therefore is a filled sac that occurs on the interior and / or exterior lining of the almond-shaped ovaries. As the name suggest, a burst ovarian cyst happens when the sac wall, or parts of the sac wall collapses and the materials within (usually blood) flow out and / or materials from outside flow into the sac.
This condition can cause abdominal pains, very often on the right side of the body. Other symptoms of burst ovarian cyst include: bloating; fatigue, exhaustion or sudden bouts of tiredness; headaches; nausea and vomiting; pain during the tail end of the menstrual period; severe, sharp or sudden pain in one or both sides of the lower abdomen; throbbing pain in the pelvis and the vagina; too frequent, infrequent or painful urination; and unaccounted pain in the ribs or upper abdomen.
But the good news is that this condition is self limiting. In many cases, it can correct itself if allowed to run its course. Although pain may be present for 4 to 10 days afterwards, health care provider usually only recommend that women get loads of bed rest, drink more fluids and maintain a fiber-rich, low sodium diet to make the healing process go faster. Additionally, relatively few women experience such condition, and many of those who do are in their pre-menopausal stage, or those who already have prior histories of problematic cysts.
Surgical intervention is only ever recommended in extreme cases and only after an extensive battery of tests to determine if the burst ovarian cyst can cause further medical complications like infection, poisoning (when the materials are flowing directly into the abdominal cavity,) or the appearance of more than one cyst in the both ovaries. Cases are considered life-threatening when there are already changes in the woman's physiology like: increased body or facial hair, noticeable weight gain or loss and strange bruises.
