Save your old photos with a Slide and negative Scanner
If you've been taking pictures for more than 10 years, you probably have a lot of slides and negatives stored away. Today's digital cameras makes it easy to take and share pictures. But if you have a collection of older images, the only way to share them is to scan them into digital form. For the true photo hobbyist, scanning your images with a slide and negative scanner will give you creative control over your images and deliver better results.
To get a decent scan of your image, first clean and prep the slide or the negative. Clean them with a soft camel's hair brush or dry compressed air. Don't use your breath to clean the images as it contains moisture that can damage the film emulsion. A pair of cotton gloves is helpful in keeping the slides clean with handling them. Fingerprints and dirt can be removed with a film cleaner solution that is available at photography stores. Apply the film cleaner with a soft, lint free cloth and carefully wipe in a straight motion across the negative or slide.
Insert the image into the scanner the correct direction. Different brands of slide and negative scanners scan the image from the top or the bottom. It will take experimenting to find out which way your scanner works. If the slide is inserted incorrectly, then the image on the computer screen will be backwards or upside down. Correct insertion saves time as you won't need to flip or rotate the image in post processing.
Set the scanner to 3000 dpi resolution. Some slide and negative scanners go up to 4000 dpi or more, but 3000 dpi is sufficiently high enough in resolution to get a high quality scan and a final image of 8 x 12 inches. Using a higher resolution may uncover imperfections in the film surface, causing you to spend more time cleaning the image up in post processing.
Once the scan is complete, use an image editing program to fix any scratches, blemishes, or dust spots. The rubber stamp and healing brushes work well for these tasks. You can also make and color corrections and cropping at this time.
Using slide and negative scanners may be a time consuming process at first, but the results are a higher quality scan without having to send any of your slides or negatives away for scanning.
