Window blinds is one kind of covering for windows besides the usual curtain. Generally it is a set of slats that can be adjusted from an open to a closed position. These slats overlap when closed and are apart when opened. It may be mechanically or manually operated. Its materials can vary from wood, plastic, fabric, vinyl, or metal. The choice of material is dependent on where it will be placed and how it will be used. For example metal blinds can be seen outside buildings and are used as protection from thieves, temperature, and even fire. For most houses wood, plastic, or fabric are used. Basically they are used for controlling daylight inside the house, minimizing visibility from inside, and are also placed for aesthetic purposes.
There are basically two kinds of window blinds, the horizontal and vertical blinds. The horizontal blinds looks like a ladder. Its system enables the slats to be suspended when opened and are only supported and held together by a fabric casement or thin cord. It can also be stacked up together by a lift cord, when the blinds are not in use. Vertical blinds on the other hand are wider than the horizontal ones. They are held together at the upper part and supported as well below usually by a cord. The slats are operated to close and open from the upper head rail. It can also be stacked together on one side if needed and not in use.
Window blinds are also synonymous with venetian blinds. In early times Egyptians have blinds which are made of reeds. The Japanese also had their version of blinds on the early times. But the Venetian blinds were first patented by Edward Beran in London in 1769. And the original vertical blinds were developed by Edward and Fredrick Bopp in Kansas City. They held the original patent but it was transferred in 1960's when the company was sold.
In the US the first venetian blinds was pioneered by John Webster of London in 1767. And in the late 18th and early 19th century it had been widely used in offices. And the largest order placed for venetian blinds in an office was ordered at the Burlington Venetian Blind Co., it supplied the venetian blinds for the windows of the Empire State building in New York.
The mechanism for operating window blinds is generally the same. Its system is composed of turning and sliding movements. The slats are turned to close and open it. They are held together thus making them turn all at the same time. The sliding motion is either piling all the slats up (for horizontal blinds) or piling them at the sides (for vertical blinds). Manually, adjustments are made by adjusting the cord. Other blinds are operated by remote control or mechanically. And there are window blinds like the mini blinds that are cordless.
Window blinds are a practical choice for lasting window coverage. It comes in different types for different needs and requirements for a room. It is even adjustable and easy to clean. There are many to choose from with the various colors and styles available.
