Window blinds comes in various sizes, types, colors, and materials. Choosing the right blinds for your room can be easy if you know where and how you want to use it in a room. Other than a window covering, how do you need your blinds to complete or complement a room? Do you need it to darken a room? Or perhaps utilize it to add as a decor to a themed room. Or maybe you need additional temperature control to a room.
Window blinds can be categorized according to types. Namely horizontal blinds, vertical blinds, mini blinds, wood blinds, faux wood blinds, cellular shades, and alternative blinds. Horizontal and vertical blinds are the basic kind of window blinds. They have the same system but different in orientation. The vertical blinds can piled to one side while the horizontal blinds can be piled up. They are also used as room partitions. Their material varies from plastic, vinyl, metal, aluminium, and even fabric. Both can be operated manually or by a remote control, depending on the design.
Mini blinds have slats that are 1" to ½" wide and are made of metal or aluminium. They are also cordless which makes it child and pet friendly. Wood blinds on the other hand have wooden slats. The design differs with the kind of wood used. There are wooden slats that are 'green' or eco friendly which are already available on the market. Generally wood blinds are sophisticated and have a warmth and homey appeal on it. Faux wood blinds are the same as wood blinds, they vary only with the material used. It is more economical and can be used at frequently moist areas compared to the original wood blinds, because it doesn't warp. It's even easier to clean.
Cellular shades are also a type of window blinds. It only differs because it is not composed of slats but rather two fabric sheets sewn together. They are called cellular shades because of the openings formed between two fabrics. By its form and the cell like shape it has, it becomes an insulation that keeps heat from going out in the winter and protects the room from heat absorption in the summer.
Alternative blinds are combination blinds that have two or more features in one blind. One type is the horizontal alternative blind that is a combination of both horizontal and cellular. Another is the horizontal sheers that work like cellular and wood blinds.
Window blinds can also be categorized according to brand. Each brand has a specific design even if they have the same product category. To name a few, the Honey Douglas brand specializes in dyed fabrics that resist fading, the Bali Shades promises soft-to-touch fabric blinds and combines quality with affordability, Levolor on the other hand is known for its quality 1" mini blinds, and other more brands each with distinct offers.
Another category of window blinds is its opacity. Since blinds are not merely used for controlling view in a room and the natural air flow in it, opacity of the material is an important factor to control the amount of daylight from entering the room. Daylight is a natural source of light and using the blinds to your advantage can create the mood you desire for a certain room. For people on the go and has irregular sleep, totally opaque blinds are necessary in their bedrooms. It helps darken the place and provides them better sleep even at daytime. In common rooms where natural light is encourage semi-opaque window blinds are recommended to be used.
