Maintaining Window Blinds

Window blinds are designed to last for years. They are durable, easily operated, and are stylish kinds of window covering. To give your money's worth in buying these window blinds, it is necessary to know how to maintain it. Basically window blinds maintenance is composed of cleaning and repair.

But before going to maintenance, it is also important to consider or to check if it the window blinds were all properly installed. Having proper installation also determines the life span of any product. Make sure that all hinges are properly secured. Also check if the wall can carry such load. Sometimes old buildings are overlooked and though window blinds aren't that heavy it still carries weight. This is done to avoid accidents and untimely breakage of the product.

Cleaning window blinds can be done once a week or after every few months minimum, to avoid dust build up. First thing to do is to dust off lightly the window blinds. You may also use a brush or soft fabric to dust off. Vacuum with an upholstery brush attachment may also be used. Then do the same for the reverse of the blinds, by turning it to the other side. For soiled window blinds use a moist towel to wipe of the dirt. But remember not to apply much pressure to avoid breaking the slats. Wipes can also be used but it is more costly.

For metal or aluminium blinds that are prone to permanent bending when pressed too much, it is advised that the whole window blinds be removed from the window. Then lay them out to be sprayed by water on hose. This can also be applied to vinyl blinds. All-purpose cleaner can also be applied for wiping off the dirt. Hang the window blinds where it can be rinsed with water. Allow it to dry before hanging it up again to the windows.

For fabric blinds, the vacuum cleaner can be used. Then do the same for the other side of the blinds. If there are more dirt that cannot be remove by simple vacuum, clean it with warm water. Use soap for areas that needs further cleaning until the dirt is removed. Cleansers can also be used to clean the fabric blinds but before applying any of it, test it first to a small part of the blinds and see the effect.

For wood and faux wood blinds dust spray is recommended. Use cloth to polish it. Then turn it on the other side and do the same.

For vertical blinds do the same techniques of cleaning according to the type of material. Just be sure to support the blinds while cleaning it by handling it by one hand under and wiping it with the other hand. Wipe it with gentle downward strokes. Be sure to not to wipe it too hard or pull it from its curtain rod.

For repairs, the first thing to do is identify what should be repaired. The usual problems are broken, missing, or bent slats, and cords that are stuck. Detach the blinds from the window and lay it then examine the parts to repair. For bent slats, try first straightening it up, it can also be removed then placed back after straightening. If it is really damaged you can remove it and replace it with a new slat. With stuck cords it may need to be restring. If the mechanism seems stuck try to remove the caps of the rail with pliers and adjust the necessary parts. For fabric blinds it is advisable to replace the fabric after a year or two.
