Like what they always say, "There is no place like house." This is a common saying that has been proven true over the years. Wherever you go, no matter how beautiful that place is, you would always want to return to where your residence is. Aside from the comfort and security you feel at home, probably the reason for this is the coziness that you have created out of that place. With some beautiful furniture and the right amount of sunlight entering the house, you got yourself a nice place to stay in.

Window shades are essential in achieving a cozy feel at home. These control the amount of sunlight entering the room during a sunny afternoon making the light in the room just right.

There are lots of different kinds of window shades. There are shades made of slats of fabric, plastic or metal and there are those made of wood. Plastic shades, sometimes called blinds made of plastic, may be vertical or horizontal. The idea in these blinds is that the slats are positioned to overlap each other so that there will be no space in between when you totally shut these blinds. You can close or shut these slats through a rotating stick which is attached to the blinds. You may pull the blinds up or down, for horizontal blinds, by pulling the cord that is also attached to it.

There are window shades where you do not have to pull a cord when you want to pull the blinds up or down. These are automated. There is tiny machinery operating in those blinds that you just need a remote to control its functions. The slats in these shades are of several kinds. For horizontal shades, the slats are separated in its center part and the end parts are stacked one over the other.

When you open the shades, it opens in a way that the edge of each slat is facing the sides. This will allow most of the light from outside to enter. If it is windy, it is also best to open your shades so as to let the wind come in freely and avoid resistance.

When you open the shades, the edge of the slats turn face down. This will hinder the light from outside from completely coming in. You wouldn't want to stay in your room or living area when the sun is high up. And curtains are sometimes just not enough to serve as a cover.

Another kind of window shades is the bamboo shades. If your house is made of wood or if you are looking to get an earthly theme in your room, then you might want to think of buying this instead of the usual blinds made of plastic or metal. The bamboo material, usually colored light brown, is also great in keeping the sunlight from coming in. It has a simpler mechanism as compared to plastic or metal window shades but nevertheless, it serves the same purpose to rooms or houses.
