Training a golden retriever is one of the most beneficial activities you can ever engage in. This particular breed of dogs is characterized by high intelligence and gentleness. When given appropriate training and reinforcement, golden retrievers make the best companions to human beings. To get started in your training, you would need a short leash, a long leash, dog treats, toys for the dog to chew on, and of course, enough time and patience.
Here are some important tips for training a golden retriever:
- Training sessions should be kept sharp and short . As dogs, intelligent as they may be, have short attention spans, a maximum of ten minutes would suffice. What's important is the regularity and frequency of your training.
- End each session with a command to improve recall even if it's something as basic as the "sit" command.
- Keep your golden retriever alert by providing chewable toys for it to play with in your absence.
- Use the commands you've tackled while training a golden retriever even outside training. For instance, apply the "sit" command while putting on the dog's leash or the "heel" command each time you take a walk.
- Make sure that there is always water available. Change your pet's drinking water thrice a day.
- Never leave a teething pup alone.
- Do not over feed your dog with treats. Overweight retrievers are more likely to develop hip problems .
- Never punish your physically.
Take a look at the following simple steps to training a golden retriever. They may seem simple at a glance but your dog's learning depends on how persistent and determined you are to make it worth the while for the both of you. Also, do not forget that your sessions are also the perfect time to have fun and develop a mutually trusting relationship with your dog.
- The first trick a golden retriever easily learns is the "sit" command. Get your dog to stand in front of you. Holding your golden retriever's favorite dog treat in your hand, move it slowly towards the dog's shoulder. Its eyes will follow your hand and the dog will sit as a natural reflex. Show your praise by giving a treat. Repeat the procedure while introducing the command "sit" this time. Let your dog associate sitting with being rewarded.
- After your dog masters the sit command, the next you should teach him is "lie." From sitting position, repeat the the step while holding a dog treat but move towards the ground this time. Following the treat will bring the retriever to lying position. Again, praise and reward then introduce the "lie" command the second time around.
- The "heel" command is used in training a golden retriever to follow you by heelside while you walk . Using a short leash, keep the dog in your left side while holding a dog treat in your hand held in front of you near your tummy. Your pet should be aware that the treat is there. Start walking and utter the "heel" command. Praise and reward every few meters. Little by little, you can lengthen the leash until it's loose.
- The stay command is the most challenging trick your golden retriever can learn. From sitting or lying position, tell your dog to stay. Move away two steps but still facing your dog. If it does not move, reward and praise. Keep on practicing until you can move as far away as possible, even out of sight. Use the long leash.
