- Make sure that there is always water available. Change your pet's drinking water thrice a day.

- After your dog masters the sit command, the next you should teach him is "lie." From sitting position, repeat the the step while holding a dog treat but move towards the ground this time. Following the treat will bring the retriever to lying position. Again, praise and reward then introduce the "lie" command the second time around.

- The "heel" command is used in training a golden retriever to follow you by heelside while you walk . Using a short leash, keep the dog in your left side while holding a dog treat in your hand held in front of you near your tummy. Your pet should be aware that the treat is there. Start walking and utter the "heel" command. Praise and reward every few meters. Little by little, you can lengthen the leash until it's loose.

- The stay command is the most challenging trick your golden retriever can learn. From sitting or lying position, tell your dog to stay. Move away two steps but still facing your dog. If it does not move, reward and praise. Keep on practicing until you can move as far away as possible, even out of sight. Use the long leash.
