Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. It is unique from every other holiday in that there does not seem to be any distractions or pressures that can intrude on this family oriented day. There is no gift exchange, which of course means that there are no crowded malls, maxed out credit cards, looming parcel mailing deadlines, and absolutely no gift return at the end of the weekend. Also, Thanksgiving seems to be a very intimate and immediate family affair with a lack of scheduling and travelling for holiday parties, work functions, extended family gift get togethers, hectic decorating, and every other trapping of many modern holidays. And because Thanksgiving seems to be a time to shun modern day intrusions, Thanksgiving becomes a staple in our memories of childhood as well as the memories that we are creating for our own families.
Thanksgiving holiday recipes and traditions are handed down each and every year, and they seem to evolve just a tiny bit with every holiday that a family experiences. There is of course the turkey, the stuffing, the sweet potato casserole and the oh-so-yummy pumpkin pie. Some families also play or watch football every Thanksgiving (think The Turkey Bowl). Many families also play party games with each other. Party games such as annual charades matches, silly Twister tournaments, round robins of Hungry Hippos and many other games for parties come to mind. Regardless of which party games your family considers a staple for Thanksgiving Day, there is no mistaking the fact that incorporating games for parties into your traditional Thanksgiving day schedule will bring your family together in a way that watching television, playing video games, and exchanging over priced gifts simply cannot achieve.
If your family has not yet begun the tradition of bringing games for parties to your après or pre Thanksgiving table, then now is a great time to start. Thanksgiving is right around the corner but that does not mean that you do not have plenty of time to choose your family fun party games and plan your new old fashioned Thanksgiving. Simply start by considering which party games your family already knows and loves. From there consider the party games that you loved to play when you were a child. Wouldn't it be lovely to introduce your family to some of the favourite and most popular games for parties from your childhood? After all, family games for parties do not have to be overly complicated, flashy or modern. The best party games are simply designed to bring your family closer together while having a lot of fun. Why not bring out the Tiddly Winks, Pick Up Sticks, or Chutes and Ladders? If you bring Operation, Jenga, Life, or other board games that you used to play, you will likely hear your teenagers exclaim with delight, "How Retro"! Also consider the personalities of each member of your family. Are your children artistic, analytical, introverted, or overly competitive? Whatever different personalities are present in your family, you will find fun party games to suit everyone. Simply look up a board games website that specializes in family board games, traditional party games and alternative games for parties. You will find a plethora of party games information on the Internet.
Once you have established which fun party games work for your family's Thanksgiving holiday, make sure you do not store those board games or jigsaw puzzles on a shelf that is too far out of reach to be enjoyed on a regular basis. After all, why let your games for parties gather dust when they could be on your coffee table helping to make more family memories. Families love to celebrate Thanksgiving in part because of the feelings surrounding traditions and family that is evoked from this holiday. Why not try to capture those feelings after Thankgiving has come and gone. Consider holding weekly or monthly family party games nights in which you incorporate new party games, puzzles, or card games. With hectic schedules, mountains of homework, looming deadlines, and economic pressures, your family deserves to unplug, de-stress, and simply enjoy each other's presence in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Incorporating party games into your family Thanksgiving holidays and family fun nights is simple, inexpensive and enjoyable to do and yet the benefits that are derived can be huge. Family games for parties will help make your family events more fulfilling, entertaining, and possibly even longer lasting. The memories that you create will go beyond eating and watching television and will become something that can be passed on to another generation.
If you are not yet among the many American families who have already introduced party games into your family Thanksgiving holidays, you still have time to bring on this new old fashioned tradition. Try it once and you are likely to find that games for parties will become as much of a Thanksgiving staple in your home as is the Turkey and Grandma's stuffing recipe.
