For those who are unaware, Bruxism is a teeth clenching condition, and in fact, it is considered to be one of the most damaging dental disorders. To make it worse, in nearly all cases the illness goes unnoticed, and even if it is detected, it's usually nothing more than a mere inconvenience at first. The reason for this is because almost all sufferers (Bruxers) generally only suffer from the habit while they're asleep, and most people only discover they have the habit when they frequently begin waking up with a painful jaw, earache, and in advanced cases, even broken teeth.
Unfortunately, if the disorder is left unnoticed it will develop into a number of other dental illnesses such as TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction). This of course, is directly attributable to continual grinding and/or clenching of the teeth, which eventually ends up causing the temporomandibular joints to become inflamed. This condition will generally result in you experiencing difficulty and discomfort when they open their mouth, in conjunction with extreme headaches and jaw popping.
So, what can you do if you discover you are currently suffering from Bruxism? Of course, it is sensible that if you have this disorder you should immediately visit with a dental practitioner, who will then be able to decide whether or not you do have Bruxism. If you do, your dentist will discuss with you as to what choices are available, ranging from the wearing of a teeth guard, through to surgery.
Teeth guards are generally manufactured from silicon by creating a mold of your teeth, and for the most part, they are largely similar to the gum shields which boxers wear . A teeth guard is worn at night when you sleep in order to discourage you from grinding your teeth together. Even though a teeth guard can't entirely prohibit you from clenching your teeth, it can stop damage. Sadly however, the average teeth guard costs about $400.00 or more.
Also, ignoring the quality or cost of your teeth guard, it simply can't be thought of as a solution, as while it may help to buffer your teeth, it cannot enable you to crack your habit, and therefore you will still discover yourself waking up with headaches or a painful jaw.
Ok then, are there any other things you might do in order to find respite, and perhaps help you to ditch a teeth guard? Yes, there are lots of of things you can try, many of which you can discover online. You'll discover many of the home cures are rather unique and unusual.
How about, just before you retire to bed chomp on a cauliflower floret, carrot stick or slice of hard pear. It is believed that this may calm an over-active mouth and stop teeth clenching. Or you can try relaxing your jaw muscles by wrapping a warm face-cloth over the joints.
Another Bruxism inducer is thought to be stress, so if you can reduce your stress levels then this may go a long way to helping. Have a loved one massage your neck, shoulders and back, or engage in some stress relieving exercises. You might even think about buying yourself a stress ball.
Returning to bed, there are other things that are said to help. Try sleepinglto sleep only on your back, it is said that sleeping on your stomach or side can raise your exposure to Bruxism. If you are unable to sleep on your back then think about being a bit imaginative with your pillows. Position a contoured pillow under your face and an ordinary pillow between your arms. This will relieve strain from your neck and jaw and should go a long way to prevent you rolling all the way over onto your stomach.
Lastly, you should ideally be trying to avoid coffee, sweet snacks, and alcohol. Contrary to what you may have heard, studies have shown that even a couple of drinks can disturb your sleep, while also trigger involuntary jaw movements. Considering that almost everyone is aware of the fact that caffeine keeps you awake, there's not much need to get into why it should be avoided before bedtime. Foods and drinks containing loads of sugar are known to raise blood sugar levels but the level soon drops back to normal, and after it does, you'll probably feel exhausted but at the same time you'll be unable to sleep well. If you are prepared to follow some of the help talked about in this article, you should be able to find some welcome reprise whilst at the same time you'll be able to remove your dependency on the teeth guard.
