The use of window blinds as coverings for windows has been traced back to early times. In fact, the first recorded users of blinds are nomad desert people who had to find a way to adjust to the unforgiving desert sun. They used a sheet of cloth to hang over their windows to block heat coming from the outside environment. Aside from that, they wet the cloths to improve their cooling properties. However, since cloth do not permit much light to pass through, future people thought of using strips of wood, plastic, metal, vinyl and polyester bundled together. In short, there are two kinds of blinds: slat and solid. Slat blinds have breaks in between strips that are either horizontal or vertical blinds. Meanwhile, solid types of these blinds typically lie along the Y axis and come in roller forms.
Moreover, ancient and Egyptians and Chinese have also been known to use window blinds while the Egyptians used reeds as material to make their blinds, Chinese used bamboos joined together by a thread. Despite the difference in materials they used, both ancient Egyptians and Chinese hung blinds on their windows to keep outsiders from seeing into their homes, thus giving them a sense of privacy. These blinds are made of reeds are not commonly seen today. However, bamboo blinds are still being used nowadays especially in Asian countries. These bamboo blinds are preferred for the oriental theme and restful atmosphere they give to a room.
Among the most popular blinds today are called Venetian. It is believed that these blinds come from Persia. Apparently, merchants bought window blinds from Persia and brought them to Venice, Italy. And so Persia and Venice are both credited for popularity of these blinds in Europeans who thought them trendy window coverings. However, technically speaking it was in the year 1769 when the first truly modern blind was produced and patented in London.
Modern blinds that we are familiar with now come in various colors and sizes and are used in both homes and businesses. Different materials are used for a variety of purposes—whether for aesthetic decoration, protection or privacy. For instance, blinds which are vertical type is preferred sometimes more than the horizontal type because they are thought to be more durable. These blinds also collect less dust and are easier to clean and maintain. Specifically, the vertical type is at times hanged over doorways that are usually left open. Food establishments may use these blinds that are made of thick plastic to keep cold air from escaping rooms which are needed cold for food storage. In warmer places, the vertical type of blinds keeps out insects such as flies from entering rooms.
As of late, automation has been the newest feature of higher-end these blinds. For instance, the metal blinds that some business establishments install outside their windows are already automated; they can be accessed by a simple push of a button or even a flick of a remote control. Automated blinds for windows are also used in homes. Indeed, window blinds have evolved a lot over time from simple wet sheets to automated window coverings that make people's lives easier.
