Window Blinds: Specific Materials for Specific Uses

Window blinds refer to slats made of various materials (i.e. wood, plastic, metal, vinyl) hung as window covering. Aside from aesthetic value and sense of privacy, blinds have a variety of purposes for homes and commercial establishments. Basically, the form and material of the blinds influence its purpose.

Bamboo blinds, as can be gleaned from the name, are made up of bamboo slats woven with rattan, leaves and grasses. They provide an Oriental atmosphere to a room, making the place more relaxing and closer to nature. Bamboo blinds are easy to set up, lasting and environment-friendly.

Roller blinds, on the other hand, are blinds made of fabric rolled up around metal battens. They are customizable to fit any window size, are easy to install and maintain. Roller blinds are one of the most commonly seen window blinds in homes and offices. Another type of these blinds is made up by fabric is Austrian blinds, which are folding blinds with no horizontal slats giving it a less structure look.

Wood blinds, broadly speaking, are known as Venetian blinds. They come in a number of wood finishes and sizes. Size is determined by the width of the wooden slats, which are commonly standard at 25, 35 or 50 millimeters. Mini blinds are venetian blinds with slat width of 25 mm. Meanwhile, micro blinds are Venetian blinds with slat width of only 16 mm or less which thus requires more slats to obscure the window completely.

There also wood blinds made of faux wood, a cheaper alternative to real wood. Faux wood blinds have risen in popularity over time as they have higher resistance to warping (bending out of shape) from heat or pressure. Due to this resistance, they are typically used in places with extreme temperature such as the kitchen, and areas where there is much|high moisture like the shower. Related to wood blinds is another subtype window blind called Pinoleum blind. These blinds are comprised of small twigs arranged horizontally and held together by thread that can be rolled upward like a roller blind.

Metal blinds are usually installed outside homes or buildings. These metal blinds are usually set-up to protect against theft, unfavorable climate and fire. They are commonly automated and controlled via switch or remote control.

Cellular shades, otherwise known as honeycomb blinds due to the shape of its cells, are very energy efficient blinds. They are available in light filtering fabrics that make a room brighter as well as in fabrics that make rooms darker.

Vertical blinds, as implied by the name, are hanged vertically from the window. They are also placed over doors that are usually kept open. Relative to other types of horizontal blinds, they collect less dust and require lesser time and effort to operate. Since they are composed of thick plastic, this type of blinds are also handy in maintaining room temperature. Such application is evident in food businesses where vertical blinds are utilized to keep cold air inside rooms where a cool temperature is preferred. In warmer places, this type of blinds is also used to keep out flies and other insects.

Potential buyers must take into consideration the material of the window blind and its adequacy in answering the daily needs of home and workplace.
