As an alternative to curtains, blinds are a specific type of window covering made up of slats. These window coverings can be installed inside or outside the building may it be a house or a commercial establishment. Usage of these blinds has even been traced back to nomadic desert people as well as Ancient Egypt and China.
Window blinds are used in a number of uses, mainly to protect from certain environmental conditions as well as to maintain privacy. The slats come in various materials such as wood or faux wood, metal, vinyl, plastic and fabric. Although there are many varieties of these blinds as to form and material, there are 2 general designs: horizontal blinds and vertical blinds. Both designs operate by the same mechanism of overlapping the slats in order to close the blinds.
Horizontal blinds are composed of slats arranged in a ladder-like manner that hang horizontally from the window. A drum or cylinder to which the upper ends of the slats are attached to is rotated to open and close the slats. Furthermore, lifting the cord allows the slats to be pulled up to the top of the window and then down again.
As the name suggests, vertical blinds consist of blinds that hang vertically from the window. Like a curtain, the cord can be pulled to separate the slats either at the center or to one side of the window.
By rotating the cords, both designs of blinds for windows can be rotated to different angles in sync in order to allow air and light to pass through. Degree of separation between the slats may be controlled depending on the extent the cord was rotated.
Comparing these two, the vertical ones are sturdier and more pliant to stronger winds which make them more durable in these conditions. Because the slats hang vertically, there is less dust accumulation which then requires less cleaning. They also require less muscle effort and are quicker to adjust. They usually come in thick plastic and generally cost less, plus they are also hanged over doorways which are mostly left open.
A peculiar variety of window blinds which deviates from the horizontal and vertical blinds is known as Cellular Shades or Honeycomb Blinds. This type of window blind is comprised of individual honeycomb cells joined together. They are designed to filter light as well as to darken rooms. Honeycomb blinds are considered as softer alternatives to wood blinds.
The blinds can be manipulated manually while some modern versions can be controlled automatically via machine accessed by keypad or even a remote control. These blinds come in different designs, sizes and forms to complement the taste of the owner, the purpose, as well as the theme of the house or establishment. In fact, several models are programmed to adjust itself according to the time of day. Also, these blinds have found itself in vehicles as some car models have been retrofitted with automobile blinds for windows or sun blinds that protect passengers from the heat and glare of the sun while inside their vehicles.
