If you are currently in the market looking for a new home improvement project, then you might want to get one or more roller shades. Roller shades are enjoying quickly becoming popular again these days, especially for the green or ecologically aware crowd. Not only are these window treatment options very inexpensive, but the conventional materials are reusable and recyclable as well. If you feel like this is the perfect time to install one or more window shades of this type, here are some tips on how to make these really stand out.
1. Opt for the shades with lift mechanism. Conventional roller shades usually support dangling chains or hanging cords, which may look great. Unfortunately, these may prove hazardous to very active young kids and inquisitive pets. Lift mechanisms allow you to pull down the shades without the chains or cords; and retracting the shade is as easy as pulling down the edge of the fabric and letting it roll up on its own. A pricier, but very time saving alternative is a motorized model. This will allow you to pull down and retract the shade with a switch or a button. Models like these also usually come with a timing device that automatically rolls the shade up or down.
2. Go green big time. Fabric is of course, one of the most prevalently used materials for this window treatment option. But if you want to make an eco-friendly statement, you may want to try buying those with green materials like weaves from bamboo and reed, or from other wood based products. Some of these have very striking patterns which may suit your sunroom or conservatory windows – or any window that looks out to your garden or backyard. Naturally green colored roller shades are especially in demand these days, but you could also go for earthy brown colors for a more neutral effect.
3. Go for bold colors and eye catching designs. Neutral colors work great for almost any room, but if you really want to call attention to your window treatments, you may want to consider getting colors that contrast with the rest of the room's color theme. Eye catching designs (and there are now many to choose from) can give you an interesting and very useful conversation piece as well. However, try to make sure that the colors complement rather than overwhelm your interior décor.
4. Install long roller shades as room dividers. Who said that these can only be used as window treatment options? Instead of having a very expensive divider installed in a particular space, why not used roller shades instead to create a very light but defined partition? You can hang these from hooks attached to the ceiling, and remove them whenever you feel like a new home improvement project is in order. You can be assured that, the cost of these shades will only be a fraction as compared to the cost of the materials alone from a permanent room divider.
