Have you ever thought about what those coverings on your windows are called? There are several specific window coverings available for use. And one of them is plantation shutters.

So how does the plantation type differ from other similar window shutters? Well, basically, this type traditionally has slats made of wood. The design is perfect to allow the flow of the air into the home without revealing too much of the room. These are also known as jalousies or louvers.

The history of these window shutters dates back to the Middle Ages. The original ones where installed to cover window spaces. But the windows then still didn't have glass. In cold weather, these window covering will be closed. During hotter days, the shutters were left open.

When the Europeans reached the Caribbean and the rest of South America, they thought that the design of plantation shutters where just too perfect for the weather in those lands. If you are keen to look around old plantation homes in South America, you will still find this kind of window covering still. Hence they were called the name it is known for today.

Well, basically, plantation shutters cover the whole window space. Then there is a rod at the middle of the slats for you to be able to maneuver open and shut the shutter slats. When the slats are pulled to fully open, they allow optimum light and air to enter the room. This is a good way to control the temperature in the room naturally. During the day time, you don't need to turn on the lights. All you need to do is to pull open your window shutters. This will help you cut costs in the power bill when you use natural light instead of fluorescents.

There are also times when the shutters are hinged for you to be able to fold them back to fold back a part or the whole of the window shutters.

There is another type of plantation shutters that is known as the café-style shutters. These are shutters that cover only part of the window. This is so to allow privacy for the people inside the room but not totally covering the window. These are for those people who live in temperate countries and do not actually need much opening or closing of the shutters.

There are also manufacturers that come up with shutter slats that are made of plastic or other composites. These were initially made to cater to those who have much concerned with the ethical implications of the use of wood. These composites are made of recycled materials that have been painted. In turn, these materials are easier to clean than the original wood slats. And they can also be more durable as well.

There are a lot of windows coverings that you can choose from. And it all depends on how you would like the ambience of your home to be and what you would like your home to look like.
