Here is a step by step guide on how you can easily and quickly clean your plantation shutters.

1. First, you need to know that manufacturers often provide directions for cleaning and maintenance. It would help a lot of if you could follow these instructions down to the last letter. Sometimes, they would also provide recommendations as to what cleaning solutions or implements to use, and again... using these recommendations will ensure that your shutters will stay looking great for a long time.

2. If you have bought unbranded window shutters, it would be best to stick with the safest cleaning materials. Lambs' wool duster is great for all types of shutter materials: from wood, to faux wood, to vinyl... etc. This type of duster can remove dust in a hurry, can go through the slats easily, and is so soft that you do not have to worry about scratching the finish. Simply tilt down all the slats of the plantation shutters and dust away in a downward stroke. Do one side first before dusting the reverse side.

Always do this before using any liquid cleaning product. This is to prevent grimy particles from clumping together in the hard-to-reach corners once liquids are introduced.

A static cling duster can be used as a substitute to lamb's wool duster.

3. Vacuum or sweep away whatever debris that may have fallen to the floor after dusting. This will lessen some of the potential dust that may float back while you are cleaning the window.

5. Spray cleaning solution on another rag and wipe on all visible surfaces. Never spray directly on the shutters themselves.

Your choice of cleaning solution would depend on the shutters' materials. You can use liquid wood or furniture polish for wooden shutters.

A soapy solution made from 1:20 liquid dishwashing soap and water can be used on faux wood and vinyl shutters; (or two to three drops of liquid dishwashing soap in 1 liter of water.) It is important to use cleaning solutions sparingly to avoid that unsightly caked-on appearance.

6. Wipe away the liquid with another dry cleaning rag. Never let the liquid to dry on the surface to avoid water marks or stains.
