Believe it or not, window blinds are not only used for stopping light from entering the room. There are other purposes that window blinds are used for. And most often, people overlook these other uses.
Window blinds are a specific type of window covering. This refers to the window coverings that would make use of slats that would open and close.
The term is inaccurately used to refer to all other sorts of window coverings. And this is a common mistake that is made by people. They would walk in a home improvement store and look for window blinds when they would like to get solid window coverings or window shades.
There are different materials that can be used for window blinds. They can be made from fabric, wood or metal.
The two different kinds of window blinds are horizontal and vertical blinds. The latter is more preferred over the former in spite of the former being more popular.
Horizontal blinds are made of slats positioned horizontally resembling a ladder. These slats are connected by a string that would also be responsible for its opening and closing. The slats turn up to 170 degrees to be closed and to block off sunlight from entering.
Vertical blinds are pretty much like their horizontal brothers. The difference is very obvious. The name itself would state it. These have vertical slats instead of horizontal ones. The slats would also be wider allowing the blinds to cover the width of the window accordingly and with the use of fewer slats.
These would often be made of stiffened fabric or plastic. The slats are hung on one end and lined one behind the other at 90 degrees when they are opened.
Window blinds are actually good in helping lessen the heat that enters the room. Since they would block the sunlight from coming in the window, then they would also be able to block some of the heat that comes with the sunlight. Hence, this would be good tools to keep the coolness in the room. This is a benefit of window blinds that is often overlooked by people.
These would also prove to be helpful in blocking small insects from getting in the room. Some window blinds would have narrow spaces in between the slats that insects cannot enter or squeeze themselves into.
Vertical blinds are often preferred over horizontal blinds, as mentioned earlier. One of the reasons is that vertical blinds would use fewer and wider slats than horizontal blinds, making them easier to clean. Horizontal slats would have thin and narrow slats that would sit on top of each other giving you quite a difficult time cleaning it.
Also, vertical blinds have better ability to close tightly. Hence, it could completely block the light from entering the room. This is beneficial for those who work graveyard or late, or those who just can't seem to sleep early.
There are several types of window blinds. And they would have almost the same benefits over the other. It would be left to you to decide what would suit your style and your home.
