For some people, home repairs are a troublesome—so much so that they avoid doing them, or they hire someone to do the repairs for them. Do you have roller shades at home? Chances are you have already encountered problems such as shades that are too tight, loose, or don't operate properly. Don't get pissed, though. When it comes to fixing your window shades, you don't have to waste money for repairs. In fact, most window shade problems can be corrected with some minor adjustments—and you can even do them yourself!
The following are some of the common problems with roller shades and the steps on how to fix them.
Shades that won't roll down
If that's the case, then something is wrong with the shades' roller mechanism. Particulalrly, the pawl-and-ratchet system (which stops the spring from moving when the shades are released) or the spring in the roller mechanism often causes the shades to become too loose or too tight. The problem also leads to the shades' failure to stay in place when they are released.
The damage in the roller mechanism can be easily solved, except when the spring is broken. The spring is too tight if the shade is hard to pull down and always snaps up. Here's what you must do to fix an excessively tight spring: when the shade is rolled up, remove the roller's flat-pin end from its bracket. Then unfurl the shade by two or three turns. Put the roller back on its bracket and then check if the shade is working properly. Adjust the roller several times until the shade is able to roll up and down easily.
Shades that won't stay up
As with the previous problem, the inability to roll up the shades may be caused by a faulty roller mechanism. To solve the problem, you will need to tighten the loose spring in the roller. Rotate the roller a couple of times. Make sure that the shade is rolled down enough before turning the roller. Roll down the shade if it is overly loose. Take out the roller's flat-pin end from its bracket and roll your shade up by hand. Keep the shade rolled firmly while rolling it up. Place the roller back on the bracket and see if the shade can be rolled up easily this time. Repeat the previous steps if the shade still fails to roll up.
Shades that won't stay down
The pawl-and-ratchet system in the roller mechanism may need some cleaning. Remove the shade from your window and take out the cap located at the roller's flat-pin end. Use a vacuum cleaner or a soft cloth to remove dust within the roller mechanism. Next, spray a bit of silicone lubricant into the roller mechanism. Replace the cap and mount the shade.
Shades that bind
The problem comes from brackets that are placed too close together. You can fix this simply by tapping the brackets slightly outward using a hammer. If the shade is still stuck, remove it from the window and carve out some wood from the roller.
