How to Remove Mildew from Your Bamboo Shades

One of the problems you may encounter when you use bamboo shades is the problem with mildew. Mildew can give your once lovely window shades dirty looking streaks and black spots that may make you want to simply remove this from where it is hanging and chuck it straight into a garbage bin. Before you give in to that impulse though, you may be happy to know that there is still hope for your mildewed shades and if you are up to the task, you can get these shades back to a cleaner and more respectable state.

What you will need when you are looking to remove mildew spots and moldy stains from your bamboo shades is a little bit of open space, preferably on your porch, and some ordinary cleaning materials. The cleaning materials you will need to have when you are determined to get rid of these dark spots and moldy streaks on your eco-friendly and "green" window shades include some of the dish detergent you have in your kitchen, hot water in a bucket, a few old yet soft towels, a soft sponge and some elbow grease. You might also require some bleach and some warm water mixed together and placed in a spray bottle for hard to remove stains and a damp washcloth and some mineral oil for giving your shades some shine after it dries.

After you take down your bamboo shades, you will need to wipe this down first with the use of one of the soft and dry towels. Once you have removed the dirt and dust from the surface of your window shades, place the other towel on your porch floor and lay down the top part of your shades on this. Dip you sponge in a mixture made with a few drops of your dishwashing detergent and the hot water and squeeze until almost all the moisture is out. Use this sponge to carefully rub down your shades with and follow this rubdown with another clean towel to dry it out. If there are spots that are hard to remove, use the bleach solution in the spray bottle over it and wipe with the sponge again afterwards.

Once you have cleaned off the whole of your bamboo shades with this method, let this hang on your porch railing to air dry. Just make sure that a towel is always underneath your window shades during the whole cleaning process to ascertain that the bamboo does not break when you are scrubbing and cleaning it. Once your shades are dry, get the damp piece of cloth and some of the mineral oil that you have and put some of this oil on this damp cloth. Wipe down your shades first with one of the clean dry towels to remove any dust particles before you run the oiled piece of cloth over the bamboo and reeds of your window shades. This slightly oiled cloth will help give your shades a lovely gloss and will help keep moisture and the possibility of mildew and molds down.
