Most people are familiar with traditional bows, but a lot have never heard of compound bows. There are a lot of differences from long and recurve bows and this is apparent from just looking at them. They utilise a cable and pulley system which together can boost the efficiency of the arrow when it is released so it will be faster.
Compound bows generally have a lot of benefits over traditional bows and one of the main ones is known as the "let off". This is a weird term to describe the process but it is the term to describe pulling the cable back so it tightens. At this point you do not need to keep it in place with relative force as the bow will control it for you. This means you can spend more effort on focusing on your target rather than the effort to hold it in place.
Due to the high efficiency of the bows they can transfer up to 80% of the force directly to the arrow which means it flies off when released. Some bows can achieve more than 300 feet per second.
Other than the obvious sight of the pulley and wheel system, the cam also plays a huge part in getting the most of out the bow. There are 4 main types of cam, which are single, dual, hybrid cam and binary cam.
The limbs of the compound bow are usually referred to the upper and lower limbs and are either side of the peeper. They can take immense force with little flexing so are not prone to breaking. Some high end bows used forged aluminium which makes them stronger and do not flex at all.
Compound bows are used in archery competitions as well as in hunting. They are also available for teenagers in the youth size bows, which are smaller and slightly slower than their adult counterparts.
There are more advantages to using a compound bow which is why they are highly sought after. The let off, described above, is one of the biggest as you will get much more accurate shots off. However, there are some trade offs and the main one is that because the bows are usually quite light weight – from 3 to 5 pounds only, which means it can affect your shot on the left-right axis. It takes some time for a beginner to adjust to this but with enough practice it is easy to overcome.
