Window shades now sold either in shops or online come in a variety of designs and basic materials. In shopping for shades or blinds, it would be ideal to avail of the services of establishments which provide complimentary consultation for its customers. Oftentimes, it could be confusing for customers to decide which of the window shades would be suited to their specific needs, and an in-house or online consultant will be of great assistance.
Prior to consultation, it would be also of help for a homeowner on the market for window shades to understand some of the basic designs and materials available. Basically, there are two types of window shades, the horizontal and the vertical version. The horizontal version is the most popular shade design. It is usually composed of metal or vinyl horizontal slats systematically connected to each other. The slats are arranged in such a way that they can be rotated, allowing light to pass in-between or the shades shut to exclude any light from the outside. The horizontal shades can also be completely raised to the top of the window through a cord for a clear outside view and allow more light to come in.
The most common example of horizontal roller shades is the Venetian blind patented in London in 1769, although the Japanese have a similar invention prior to this patent. Bamboo and wood are also used in this type of roller shades aside from plastic or metal. Horizontal shades, with years of use , have the disadvantage of trapping dirt and their mechanism breaking down especially if constantly exposed to strong wind or subjected to abuse in closing, opening or lifting the slats.
Less likely to be adversely affected by strong winds are the horizontal version of window shades. Less effort is required to operate these shades which are likewise easier to maintain. The vertical slats can be made of metal, stiffened fabric or plastic. The slats used in vertical shades are generally wider and are so arranged in a rail system that can be pulled either to separate midway of the window or gather at one side and stack neatly on both or one end. Each slat of vertical window shades can also be rotated in sync to effectively control the amount of light coming in from the outside. The mechanism employed can even close the slats tightly for complete privacy and total cover from outside light.
For energy efficiency, some designs of window or roller shades have been developed. One is called the cellular shade or honeycomb blind which are made of individual cells assembled together. Looking like a honeycomb when viewed from the side, these shades generate their energy efficiency from the air pockets trapped in the air cells. Buyers of window shades with honeycomb designs can select from those made of light-filtering or room-darkening fabrics.
