Do you have vertical blinds at home? Although these blinds are made to be durable, their vanes will eventually get damaged. Young kids and pets at home can wreak havoc on your blinds. Even you yourself can cause the vanes to break if you're not careful enough with using the window blinds.
To keep the blinds functioning properly at all times, you will need to repair them as soon as you detect damage. Yes, you read it right—you can repair damaged blinds yourself. You don't need to seek help from professionals because repairing blinds is quite an easy job. That way, you can save some money and learn something new about vertical blind repair.
The following are the steps in repairing vertical blinds:
1. Remove the damaged vane that you are going to replace. Open the blind and release the vane from the hook on the carrier. Bend the vane out to open the carrier and then pull the vane out. For vanes made of fabric, remove the connector of the spacer and chain from either side of the vane weight. Then take out the weight out of its holder below the vane. If you have aluminum or vinyl blinds with spacer chain, take out the tie-down clip or screw that keeps the end of the chain secured. Remove the damaged vane by pulling the other vanes through the chain.
2. Install the replacement vane. Put its curve in the same direction as the curves of other vanes. Then hold the vane close to the top. Push up the vane slowly into the carrier and then push it down to lock it in place. For fabric blinds, insert the vane weight again. Make sure that the clip side is pointing upwards. For aluminum or vinyl blinds, insert the chain through the holes on the new vane and then through the rest of the vanes. Keep a correct spacing by cutting a piece of cardboard to the right length. Use the current spacing as a guide for the proper length. Place the cardboard in between the vane that you installed lastly and the vane you will put next.
3. To repair the parts of the head rail like the hanger replacement and the cord, take out all the vanes as instructed in the first two steps above. Next, remove the head rail from the brackets. To do so, unlock the head rail by turning an arm on a mounting bracket. Ask someone to hold the other end of the blind so that it will not fall. Then take the head rail to a repair shop. It is best to leave the head rail repair to a professional since this window blind component has complicated parts that are hard to disassemble and reassemble.
