A house is primarily a means of shelter for its inhabitants. People need shelter from rain, from wind, and from sun. Also essential to human nature is privacy. We need houses to shelter us from the constant scrutiny of the public eye. Houses are built in all manner of architectural designs, shapes, sizes, color, and material. Window blinds are a decorator's favorite way of providing some measure of control over window openings. They allow us to open and close these openings as we see fit. Privacy is the primary concern, but also the amount of sunlight at certain times of the day must be regulated. Shutters, awnings, curtains, roller shades, and different kinds of blinds have been some of the solutions to this problem. In the matter of vertical blinds, there are all kinds. There are natural looking blinds made out of wood and bamboo. There are blinds made out of vinyl. There are blinds made out of fabric, aluminum, and those made out of metal. What characterizes blinds from the other means of window covering is its superior ability to control the amount of sunlight or view that we need. This is due to its structure.

The material; whether fabric, wood, or plastic, is cut into strips. The strips are then neatly arranged together into a horizontal or vertical stack. This is ingenuously done with the use of ropes. The ropes are connected to a pulley. The pulley is part of a mechanism which allows the control of the blind slats. With a simple pull of a rope, the slats glide on a track and stack up. The rope locks in the stacked up slats with the use of a small roller in the mechanism. The strips could also swivel open and closed with the help of a rod. This is connected to the pulley, rope, track, and roller contraption. The whole mechanism is located in the upper part of the blind. Upon an easy installation process involving levers, screws, and a screwdriver, the contraption is covered with a strip of material. This is how the installed window blinds achieves its clean, defined look, and how it achieves its precise control.
