It is designed to hang from the ceiling and cover French windows and patio doors, all the way to the floor. Offices and business centers make use of these blinds for their glass walled partitions and wide glass windows. The blinds are fastened securely up and down with sturdy materials. Mechanisms are designed for ease of use in the opening and the closing of the slats. It can also be opened fully, with the slats stacked together at the side of the windows. But there is more to the window blinds than its serious side.

Modern houses have blinds with contemporary designs. Colors and textures can be selected to suit the interior of a house or office. Vinyl blinds come in a range of colors, from the bright and dazzling, to the subdued. Children's rooms can have window coverings of pastel hues. Vinyl can copy textures so that there are wooden and other designs that still have the advantages of vinyl. For more serious or classic home interiors, then real wooden blinds are also available. These are more sedate in appearance. Fabric is also a good choice of material. For sturdy functional blinds that are installed outdoors, metal is the material of choice. Both horizontal and vertical blinds, as well as mini blinds have these choices of materials available.

For other choices in window covering and protection, there is the awning that is a roof like structure, installed directly outside a window. Then there are the roller shades, which is a flat sheet on a roller that could be pulled out and put inside as needed. Wooden shutters are installed outside a house and conected to a window by hinges. These can be opened or closed like doors. Curtains and draperies are pieces of cloth that are hung from a rod on the windows. The cloths could be layered, or made with thicker material according to need.

Of all these different kinds, window blinds offer the best wide ranging coverings with a wider choice of design and material.
