Baitcasting fishing reels can be a much more enjoyable experience but at the same time can be a complete nightmare. Although you have much more control and dynamics over your fishing you may find it takes considerable practice to get used to it and minimize your chances of a backlash.
This can be the cause of frustration for many people and its not fun having to unravel your line afterwards but with some dedication you can minimize the number of times this happens to you, and a decent reel can also go a long way to helping you achieve this.
In order to cast a baitcasting reel properly you should practice this before heading out on a fishing trip. Any open area is suitable such as a field, and you can also practice your control in your living room or while watching television.
With a small weight on the end of the reel, hold your thumb over the spool so the line cannot move and after you let it go the weight will fall to the floor - your aim here is to stop it just before it hits the floor and this may take several hours practice to get good at it. This is important for controlling your casts.
When you are ready to start casting head to your open area and make sure there is a suitable lure or weight on the line. The tension on the reel should be enough to let the weight fall to the floor but stop once it hits so no more line comes off.
With the rod in hard, cast the lure making sure your thumb is on the spool when the rod is behind you - this is called backcasting. As you bring it round and begin the forward cast release your thumb so the line can fly off the spool. As you approach your target area get ready to reapply yout thumb as your practiced earlier so no more line can come off. It is important you cast from the wrist and not your shoulder or you may end up going off course.
As you clamp down on the spool you have casted successfully, although this may also take several hours practice to fully get the hand of it. Be sure to do as much as you can without actually going fishing so you can learn how casting works best with your rod and reel. Id highly recommend having a thing head screwdriver or knitting needle handy to help you pick out the knots though – backlashes are inevitable sooner or later.
