There are more than 13 species of the Hoodia plant. Companies that claim to have genuine Hoodia Gordonii should be able to provide the following:

1. A valid CITES Certificate proven that the Hoodia has been legally imported from South Africa

The only legal harvesting of the Hoodia Gordonii Cactus Plant from the Kalahari Desert is on government farms. The San Bushmen are paid a royalty on this Hoodia. If the company making your Hoodia diet pills is not paying royalty to the San Bushman (i.e. if they have no CITES certificate), they are not getting the Hoodia from the Kalahari Desert. Remember, it has been proven that only Hoodia Gordonii cactus plants from this desert are effective in decreasing appetite.

Additionally you should ensure that you Buy Hoodia from:

1. FDA approved manufacturer
2. A company with no FDA warnings (if in doubt search in google for 'company name fda warning'
3. If in the UK then ensure it is also manufactured under stringent GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), preferably by a ISO9001 compliant organization
4. Again if in the UK Hoodia can only be sold as 100% Pure Hoodia Gordonii with no additional active ingredients – if the Hoodia you are considering buying contains things like Green Tea, Guarana, Cafeine etc then it is Illegal to sell and buy this kind of Hoodia product in the UK.

Before buying Hoodia gordonii products you should be aware of the pitfalls but if you follow the advice above then you will ensure that you are buying Legal, Genuine Hoodia from an approved source.
