The reason for founding gateways is to deal with traffic on a network. As networks have widened, different types of traffic have been added that are being sent over networks. Formerly, there used to be data networks that simply carried data traffic on a network. After that voice was added to be carried on the network. Some organisations maintain two dedicated networks, one for data and the other for voice. Then, multimedia also started being transported over networks.
Hence at present, the networks are carrying a mix of traffic on the network, particularly the internet. So the equipment used to carry this traffic had to be built to handle with the new demands. There are different standards of modulation that are used to hold traffic on a network. The modulations/re-modulations used is V.92, V.90, V.34, V32bis, V.22bis, V.32, V.23, V.22 and V.21. There are two types of gateways the V.8 gateway and the universal gateway.
The benefit of a universal gateway is that it can accept packets of different modulations and return answers in the same modulation. In the case where a universal gateway does not identify a packet, it can send a request to translate the modulation or it can refuse the packet. Either gateway can request a change to modem relay or the packet exchange continues. At the end of a session, any undelivered packet is discarded.
This in gist means that a universal gateway can communicate with gateways using different modulations. Hence the call gets established and the packet exchange starts. The universal gateway will find the modulation automatically, and adjust its communication on that modulation.
Universal gateways have solved the problem of using dedicated gateways for different networks. This also regulates the process of packet transfers as there are no delays. Or the delays are reduced till the transfer mode is established. Universal gateways have made a wide impact on voice gateways as voice networks have changed. Previously only analog was carried on telephone networks, then digital packets were introduced. The modulations and packet sizes changed.
As a result, it became even more difficult to establish a handshake. Thus, technology had to be standardised. This was done and different standards were required to be bound to. Though, this did not avert communication technology from advancing, and so the networks had to be advanced.
Not too far back for TVs, there was an antenna, and then came the dish and then cable. For phones there was the copper wire, which is still there in various places as is the analog phone. Still, these copper wires are now carrying voice, internet and TV on the same cable. So, the system and the gateways controlling these different traffic modes have to be coordinated. For this, rather than putting up a bank of different gateways, it makes sense to use a single universal gateway.
Nearly all main networks and telecommunication companies have switched to universal gateways. Universal gateways are quite advance technology and is rapidly introducing in high-end networks. Packet rates have increased with the use of fiber optic cables, which in turn require faster connectivity without any latency.
