Regardless of how long ago a piece of music was written, there has always been a musical line written for a bass part. Whether it is using the foot keyboard on an organ, playing a standing double bass with a bow, or playing the tuba, all music has needed a foundation, and this is found in the form of a bass line. The driving base line is what keeps music from sounding hollow and incomplete. With the advent of jazz, blues and then rock and roll, a different type of instrument was needed to play a strong bass line. The bass guitar was then invented.
Since the 1930s, bass guitars have had the form we know them in now, but the Bass, which preceded it, has been on the scene a lot longer. The bass guitar was different from the bass that everyone had been familiar with for many years though. Rather than play the bass guitar up and down, either plucking the strings or bowing the strings, the bass guitar is played as though it were a regular guitar and is held in a horizontal position. The bass guitar and the electric guitar look similar to each other because they both have a solid body. However, the neck of the bass guitar is much longer neck than that of the electric guitar. Also, unlike an acoustic guitar which is hollow, with a sound hole to allow for amplification, the sound of a bass guitar is amplified by plugging it in to an amplifier and speaker. A bass guitar typically has four strings which are tuned an octave lower than the lowest strings of a regular guitar. It is often played by plucking or thumping the strings, unlike other guitars which are strummed. Because bass guitars lay the foundation of the music harmonically as well as keeps the beat, like the drums, it is considered a rhythm instrument.
In the 1950s, the famous name of Fender produced the first electric bass guitar for the masses. Right from its inception, quite a few professional musicians started to tour with Fender's electric bass. It was pioneered by William 'Monk' Montgomery and Roy Johnson. These men both played the bass guitar under the visionary musician and bandleader, Lionel Hampton. This man was very open-minded. Mr. Hampton along with his very best bass players helped the Fender electric bass guitar achieve respect and popularity among musicians. A short time after Fender released his first Fender Precision Bass, Gibson introduced a bass that resembled a violin, unlike Fender's bass.
In today's world, one can get a bass guitar that comes in different shapes and materials; there is a difference of opinion about what constitutes a better bass guitar. Preference is what it really comes down to in the end. The bass guitar's body is typically of wood construction. However, other materials such as graphite and a few exotic woods like bubinga and ebony are becoming gaining in popularity. Each has a different sound and tonal quality than another, so it is best to try different types to see which sound you prefer. Something else to think about is whether you want frets on the neck or not. This creates a different sound because the strings will vibrate directly on the neck which is made of wood, instead of on the frets.
Playing the bass guitar is a lot of fun no matter what bass guitar you prefer. Just remember that music would not be the same without it.
