Essaouira is also a World Heritage Site. First named after the Muslim Saint Sidi Mogdoul, via Portuguese, its name became Mogador. Even after the Castelo Real de Mogador was established, constructed by the King of Portugal in the 16th century, the port was still frequented by pirates for the next 200 years even as mollasses and sugar derivatives were exported. In the 18th century a number of major changes were made to the Medina of Essaouira. Theodore Cornut, a French engineer, joined by several European architects and builders, created the modern fortress we see today. They were also responsible for the structure of the city as it still stands. The port was renamed at this time as a derivation of Souira, or "small fortress". The name eventually became Es-Saouira, or "the beautifully designed".
