Programming of the old time radio is certainly different from the formats we know today. But it was between the 1930s and the 1950s that the New Media Age was coming to its highest point. Considered as the Golden Age of on air broadcasting, old time American radio had introduced experimental agenda that we can still see remnants of in modern radio talk shows. Here are some of the more successful old time radio programs of the Golden Age.
1945. Mr. Hush Contest. Quiz shows with the participation of listeners started at this time with the Mr. Hush Contest. This was a guess-who-it-is contest where the listeners get to phone in their answers over live broadcasting. Prices were incidental, mostly freebies given away by the show's sponsors. However, the real thrill at the time was getting as many people as possible to speak over the air.
1945. Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick. The first commercially successful he said / she said show, Dorothy Kigallen and husband Richard "Dick" Kollmar had two successful years on American old time radio talking about almost everything under the sun. Similar radio formats with a male and female tandem soon started appearing in other radio networks as well.
1928-1932. Amos 'n' Andy. Comedy skits have never really achieved such on air popularity as that of the fictional characters Amos 'n' Andy. The history of old time radio is marked by these creations from Freeman Gosden and Charles Corell, who also voiced over all the dialogues of the main protagonists, and about 170 others "guests" on the skits. Aside from being commercially successful, Amos 'n' Andy also gave the rise to syndication, where on air talents can patent their concept and sell their recorded programming to other radio stations.
1941. Walter Winchell. If the term shock-jock was invented early on, Walter Winchell would have won the title hands down. His style of reporting was considered as gossip journalism – and everyone loved it. Winchell had the most-listened-to news program during the decade. And the advent of World War II certainly did not dampen his broadcasting style.
1952. Adult Western. Radio drama was not anything new at this stage, but when the audience started hearing gun shots, walking boots and horses riding away on the radio, things certainly started looking great again for old time radio comedy and drama presentations. These seemingly realistic sound effects were the brainchild of Norman MacDonnel and John Neston, which sealed 1950s as the last few vestiges of glory for American radio of old time.
