American radio of old time has had its most memorable moments during the 1940s. Here, the more successful on-air experiments of the past two decades have not only flourished successfully, but have spun other radio genres as well. This was the time when the new Media Age of "old time radio" was starting its eventful journey. For starters, 2 years before the 40s officially started, broadcasters were given a very intense representation on the impact of simply listening to the radio. Orson Welles' dramatic reading of the War of the Worlds in 1938 sent panic among the crowd; and an estimated 1 million people had actually believed that the Martian Invasion of the planet was actually going on.
From that moment on OTR or old time radio begun several ventures, many of which had successfully garnered niches in radio broadcasting history. Here are some of the highlights:
1. Old time radio of the 1940s will forever be associated with Armed Forces Radio Service or AFRS. Of course, with the outbreak of the Second World War, and with the War Department of the US giving out B or Buddy kits (consisting of radios, records and transcriptions disks of prominent radio shows); US soldiers and the rest of the country were tuned in to live discussions, updates and shows about the war at hand. On air shows like: Command Performance, G.I. Jive, G.I. Journal, and Mail Call were prevalent until 1945. Of course, the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 (2:22 pm) and the D-Day announcement on June 6, 1944 (3:32 am) were very memorial events as well.
2. Although coming in at the latter part of the 40s old time radio era, the on air broadcast of Dragnet ushered in a new dawn of crime / police drama. Creator Jack Webb managed to hook people up to the radio in 1949 on private eye clichés for a half an hour every week.
3. Giving life to characters from the comic books is not at all a new fad. In 1946 to 1947, Superman adventures against intolerance flew all over the airwaves. The Superman drama focused on complicated and even controversial issues like: bigotry, hate and racism.
4. Bing Crosby may have been a great on air talent, but his contribution to radio history is more than crooning his way to the bank. In 1946, he pre-recorded his weekly series, and had it mastered (edited and enhanced); becoming literally the first commercially successful radio talk show host with a mastered tape.
