It seems hard to believe now, in the age when television is ubiquitous, but there was a time when people relied on radio for their entertainment. This period, dating from the 1920s, when radio got more popular in the US, to the late-1950s and early-1960s, when TV became predominant, is known as the Golden Age of Radio. During this era, commercial radio treated its listeners to a great variety of program formats, providing everything from radio dramas to variety and comedy shows to game shows and live concerts.
The most listened to programs in the late 1920s were musical shows which featured the sponsor's name in the title, i.e. Champion Spark Plug Hour. These programs showcased the era's leading orchestras and big bands playing popular tunes of the day, heard through remote broadcast from ballrooms and theaters. But other musical styles, such as classical and country music, were also prevalent.
Top comedy talents, many of them also appeared in films later on, also ruled the airwaves: the Marx Brothers, Abbot and Costello, Jimmy Durante, George Burns and Gracie Allen and Red Skeleton. There were also gag shows such as Can You Top This? and parody programs presented by satirists such as Spike Jones.
Since the Golden Age of Radio also coincided with the golden age of the pulps and comics, when such publications could sell millions of copies, many comic and pulp characters also had their own radio shows. The most popular of these were The Shadow and The Adventures of Superman, although lesser-known characters such as Nick Carter and the Spider also had their own programmes. More ubiquitous were shows featuring characters from comic strips, such as Dick Tracy, Blondie and Popeye.
Sure enough, there were also soap operas on radio . In fact, such day-time serialized programs acquired their familiar name during the 1930s, due to the fact that their primary sponsors were soap and detergent products. More prestigious dramas were presented on anthology shows such as Mercury Theatre on the Air and CBS Radio Workshop. They featured top Hollywood and Broadway stars such as Helen Hayes and Orson Welles, and presented adaptations of popular novels, plays and novels, such as Lost Horizon and A Tale of Two Cities.
The Golden Age of Radio is said to have ended in the early-1960s, when television became more popular and music became the main format of commercial radio. However, many people, even those who were not born during that era, look back with fondness on a time when radio was king and the world was a more innocent place.
